Praying mercy with the Psalms

PRAYING MERCY WITH THE CHURCH’S PRAYER BOOK – THE PSALMS

The Psalms have often been referred to as the Church’s Prayer-book. The Psalms express human emotions of joy, anger, pain, suffering, love, etc interwoven with faithfulness, trust & the reassuring knowledge that God remains faithful to His people. There is a Psalm or a verse from a Psalm for practically every situation & emotion imaginable. The Psalms thus help us to pray, giving the much needed expression to our emotions, feelings & situations whilst still giving us hope in despair, reassurance in doubt & a sense of fulfilment at every joyous occasion.

In this year of mercy, let us unite with the Universal church in prayer, allowing God’s own word (scripture) to echo our needs & feelings. Listed below are some of the “Mercy psalms” that echo & highlight the many facets of the Father’s Mercy for us his children. Alongside is a verse from the Gospels that thematically highlights how Jesus is the face of the father’s mercy
